This is an official heads up that in mid-February, the Grimeology.com website will be RIP. There is no money in this label and due to life circumstances I can no longer pay out-of-pocket to keep the website alive. Which is a bummer. But, this blogspot will be the future site of all Grimeology-related happenings. The grimeology.com URL may be retained via Blogger; I will post to let people know if this happens in order to update links, etc.

*Nostalgia warning* Grimeology was founded in 2003 by Adam and myself as an imaginary label to release imaginary records by imaginary bands. In the sweetest way possible. Upon the conception of Hooves For Hands later that year, our first "real" "record" was released and thus Grimeology moved into the realm of semi-real existence. For the next few years, Grimeology remained fairly inactive as a label, but active more as a collective of musical projects for a group of like-minded homies (HFH, Thought Control, Nicholas Venaglia, Grimeology DJs, pLYWOOD, Pst Pst, Architeuthis, etc), as well as a mobile-DJ unit (Hoodrich, Turkey P, and SORCE1). Paralleled with my college thesis project, 2005 saw the first proper CD-R releases by various Grimeology-affiliated comrades in small, handmade editions of 10. Shortly after, the collective slowly left Worcester and dispersed throughout the country, continuing to work on their respective endeavors. In 2007 I resurrected the label aspect of Grimeology as a home for releasing cassettes and CD-Rs related to my then newly-found love for Noise. As we move into 2010, I feel that my passion for Noise has clouded and overshadowed the original tenements of Grimeology, something which is personally important to me and I believe should remain intact. Which leads us to this paragraph:

Grimeology has been slow as of late but we just want to let everyone know that the label is not dead yet. If you are an artist with a release slated to come out on Grimeology, rest assured it will still be released. However, after the chunk of planned upcoming releases are done & out, the label aspect of Grimeology will close its doors indefinitely in order to shift focus to new label projects. Grimeology as a collective entity and force of unstoppable sweetness & Milk Duds, however, will never die. The Grimeology label will still remain somewhat active, albeit in a different way. Expect much more infrequent (if thats even possible) smaller "art" editions and mixed media releases from original collective members in the future, hearkening back the original days of Grimeology. I (matt) will be focusing my energy on continuing to release tapes alongside Toby via our label NNA Tapes, as well self-releasing tapes for my personal project, A Snake in the Garden.

Infinite thanks to everyone for supporting the label over the years, and for the dedicated patience of the artists. It has been a labor of total love. Expect the same quality and standards from Grimeology to be put into all future label endeavors, but without the ridiculous lag-time. To clear up any confusion, here is the official list of remaining releases, which will be released in order of catalog number:

The birth of Grimepress comes to us in the form of an exclusive zine by artist/musician and purebred grimer Nicholas Venaglia. "Cruel Summer" is a new collection of found items, photography, drawing, and collage. A cryptic and personal journey constructed in Albuquerque, New Mexico while on easter holiday in 2008, masterfully xeroxed for the true photocopy fetishist.
Black and white, 12 pages, hand-numbered and labeled by the artist himself. Edition of 10.

GRM-FILM01: A SNAKE IN THE GARDEN "LIVE @ 119" dvd-r

Our first theatrical Grimeology release. Live action from A Snake In The Garden filmed at 119 Gallery in Lowell, MA in December of 2007. Features live performance of the material on the "Sword Without A Sheath" cassette, which was a very limited tape released by ASITG for a string of live shows in Winter 07 throughout New England and NYC.
Unique hand-inked 'rorschach' splats on heavy red stock, hand-painted disc labels, and info sheet. Approx. 13 minutes. First edition of 5 copies.

"HUMAN TERATOGEN/VESTIGIAL LIMB C-28 (GRIMEOLOGY)
A split between two projects I hadn't even heard of prior to receiving this. Human Teratogen (who I kept thinking was Human Tetragon) from Massachusetts and Vestigial Limb from Kentucky. Human Teratogen plays mudded down harsh waves of sound over the aural equivalent of a steam locomotive. It some how gains momentum while gruelly climbing up hill. There is no real direction in this track, but it has progression, and that's really what is important. Nothing bothers me more than stagnant noise that just sits there to fester in its own sonic feces. Vestigial Limb follows in suit. Sloppy underlying deep noise with a forward momentum keeping it afloat. Tapes and a record player are also used, but hidden under the guise of object amplification/destruction. High end shrieks make an occasional cameo within the track. Hats off to Grimeology to being one of the few tape labels who is smart enough to dub their tapes loud as fuck.

A Snake In The Garden / Oak ... The Enchanted Forest Tour, Summer 2007

A few weeks ago I had the distinct pleasure of embarking on my first (small) tour playing music with my good buddies in Oak; Toby, Sara Paule, and Chris. Although the tour was only around five days long, it felt like a long and satisfying trip through the enchanted highways and biways of our lovely New England corridor... perfect weather, cool people, cool places, and enchantedness all around. I was able to document the trip on the grimey old digital camera I've had for years... take a look and a listen. Many thanks to everyone who helped set up shows, played alongside us, bought tapes, let us crash at their place, gave us food/beer/money etc... you are greatly appreciated. Hello there. A new segment of grime news straight out of the lower intestine. Spring is here, and most of us couldn't be happier. The blanket of eternal frostbite has been removed and its time for new Grimeology releases, shows, and other nugs.

/// A SNAKE IN THE GARDEN has an upcoming show next weekend, Saturday March 31st, at the Radio Bean in Burlington, VT. He will be playing alongside fellow BTV experimentalists OAK [link], as well as HELLO SHARK [link]. HELLO SHARK is up first around 10:00 or something, followed by OAK, and then ASITG from around 11:45 to closing. The Radio Bean does serve alcohol, some come get some drinks and show support. A SNAKE IN THE GARDEN will also have copies of his new tape, "WINTER'S BURN", for sale. 5 dollars!

Designer Logo raised a ton of money for Vermont Cares, an organization dedicated to education and prevention of HIV and AIDS. Turkey P even got asked to DJ a wedding in August... how grimey is that? ///It has been reported that the one, the only MADLIB AKA THE BEAT KONDUCTA placed a Grimeology sticker, courtesy of Grimeology life partner ZAC GALEN, on one of his turntables after the Stones Throw Chrome Children Tour show in Cambridge, MA. Albuquerque, NM's artist/musician/overall-radguy NICHOLAS VENAGLIA will be getting together with DANGER!RAYGUN for a split album full of lovely soundscapes. Nick reportedly has a couple of tracks in the bag, and D!R has some stuff on the backburner waiting to be completed. Each musician's style is similar in that they are both rooted in turntable/sample-based electronic music, but different enough that the listener will be able to remain consistantly stoked on sound throughout the whole record.
